The Monal restaurant is to be demolished by the Supreme Court in order to protect Margalla Hills.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s extensive 25-page ruling on the removal of Monal Restaurant from the Margalla Hills National Park has been made public by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The ruling highlights the inherent worth of nature by declaring that “living in a world abundant with various species is necessary to fulfill one’s fundamental right to life and to live it with dignity (Articles 9 and 14 of the Constitution).” It is a known scientific fact that the disappearance of trees, plants, animals, insects, clean rivers, and pure air signals the beginning of our own demise. The decree states that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Islamabad Capital Territory Police will assist the Wildlife Board in taking ownership of the properties, including Monal, La Montana, and Gloria Jeans, on September 11, 2024. The buildings are to be removed, and the area will be guarded.

The trash must be properly removed, not disposed of inside the park’s boundaries. After that, the Wildlife Board will decide how best to use the mountain ridge where the restaurants once stood. It may confer with specialists and environmentalists to decide whether to remove the foundations or use them to build an artificial lake that will catch rainwater and be used to help put out fires in the National Park.

“Under no circumstances should the buildings be left abandoned or derelict, nor should any debris remain on the site,” the ruling underlines. To guarantee that the area once more forms a vital component of the National Park, every effort must be taken.

In addition, the Capital Development Authority and Monal Restaurant have finalized the lease agreement.

“The Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change shall conduct a joint survey of Monal Restaurant and other constructions in the area to assess environmental damage and take necessary actions to prevent further environmental degradation,” the order further specifies.

Furthermore, the lease agreement has been finalized by Monal Restaurant and the Capital Development Authority.
